I've had to turn away orders there are so many people who need hose! So, this is a good thing. I've made a jacket for Julius for dance and a kilt for my nephew and my brother-in-law. I have 2 possible commissions for other kilts. Other crafting is on hold, but the Scottish related crafting is going on full steam ahead!

A quick update on the last half of a year!

I've decided that my reflective life expressed through blogging will move forward both here and on fieldlearning (the homeschooling blog). I hope to use this post to hit on a few highlights, probably without hyperlinks which I will regret not putting in at a later point, but for now, posting without links is better than not posting at all!

I heart Ravelry! - I'm Bonnietoes on Ravelry and I think this is about the coolest web interface software, community thing anywhere! I hope to use it more for cataloging my yarns and keeping track of my projects.

Speaking of Bonnietoes - my kilt hose making venture is going well. I've got a number of orders and a few more people who seem interested. I am enjoying the projects and so far I've spaced them appropriately enough to not feel rushed or under pressure (which would take all the enjoyment out of it!)

Personal knitting - besides a couple of small projects I've made an Aran shrug for myself out of homespun Romney. I am so excited that I actually took this project from roving to garment.

Spinning - I've gotten some lovely rovings at the PA Farm Show from Terry Kunst and Kate Bostek and am having a blast spinning those up. Wow!

I have gotten some knitting done. A couple of hats from the current Knitty. Easy, fun, but the one I made for myself I just didn't like on my head. So, I gave it to a friend. She always looks good in hats. I started on Ewan's kilt socks - one is done - I must say, it is gorgeous! This design has one split diamond and the marl colors change as well. Quite a bit of color going on. I made a really contact with a woman on dance.net who may hire me to do a pair of dance hose for her. Plus she gave me some really great information about ordering PV tartan direct from the mill. I want to make up some beginner kilties for the school.

In other news my hard drive is out of commission so I am having to borrow my husband's computer at night. No picture uploading going on for the next few weeks.

I decided not to do Craft House or the Curves craft sale this year. With my father-in-law passing away just over a month ago, I want to make sure that there is lots of time during the season to be with people I care about. I love to craft, but I have enough projects on my plate without adding more and turning the next 6 weeks into a frantic mess. Yes, I love it, but it makes me crazy at the same time. A number of the ladies at Curves asked about Erin's Brownie and Cocoa jars, so it good that she made an impression with them.

The tartan for the next kilt is on order. Julius is going to have the Antarctic tartan. Half the cost of the tartan benefits the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust, so it goes to a good cause and it is a great tartan. Julius has always loved the emperor penguin so it has a special meaning for him that it would help them.

Swing!

 DSCN2686.JPG
Originally uploaded by snickerdoodlestudio
The new kilt (and vest and hose) in action at the Green Lane Scottish Festival. But, I am glad I won't have to make another one for awhile (Julius still has a hem to let out and has at least an inch in the waist.) I think Erin is wearing it just a little high in the pictures. There are a few little things that I can see at the top and the waist measurement in the pleats is .5 an inch too big, but all that will be covered by the yet to be finished waistcoat. As soon as the yarn comes in I'll be making her hose to match as well. Now, if she can just hold off on the growing so that the outfit will last her through the rest of Novice and Intermediate!

We are off to a competition near Syracuse this weekend, so she'll have to wait to wear this new outfit until September. During the kids Ukrainian dance camp there was an embroidery class for the adults. It was supposed to be 1.5 on three days, but it ended up occurring on four days and basically lasting as long as you were interested. The instructor is a multi-crafter and I hope to learn how to do Pysanky (you know, the eggs) from her as well. She was super nice as were all the rest of the ladies in the class. I learned so much about Ukrainian culture and they were eager to share. This is a slightly belated fortieth birthday celebration. At first I wasn't going to do the whole dressing the part thing. I was hoping to find something at the Goodwill that might work, but if I didn't, oh well. But, the more I thought, the more the bug bit. This could really be fun. So, yesterday I went to Joann's and found a vintage pattern and the most perfect fabric (in my opinion) and made this. Today we stopped by a different Joann's and got some fabric for a cute scarf and some flowers and butterflies and things to stick in our hairdos. One more stop to Payless for some black sandals tomorrow and I should be set. I'm hoping Trish has some big earrings and I've located the perfect set of faux pearls for around my neck. Pictures on Monday!

You've got to visit the Hon Fest website to see all the kitsch.

German Heritage Tartan Socks

 DSCN3584.JPG
Originally uploaded by snickerdoodlestudio
Another pair of kilt socks for Rocky. I got them done in less than a week. His were easier than some of the others because his legs are still small and there is no reduction down the back of the leg. I was really well with how well the colors match his tartan. I also made a change to Sadie's socks and duplicated stitched over the black that ran through the purple and made it white. (Not that you can really tell in the picture above.)

The Purple Stewart hose that I made last month were in use on Saturday as well:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/RlEN9mF1N6I/AAAAAAAAAGg/foP7HjPFbC8/s320/DSCN3436_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5066846407616706466" />

And, while I was at the festival I picked up a pound of lovely Romney/Mohair roving. His only complaint was that the feet were a little small. Yikes! I'm not sure how hard it would be at this point to try to take them apart and rip out the foot and redo it. He sounded as though he thought they would work but asked me to do the next ones bigger. So here are the pictures:

On the azalea:

Close-up:

In action - I caught one of Rocky while he was changing a sign during the Phoenixville Celtic Fest. Hooray! I am really happy with how they turned out. They seem to fit well too. I deliver them tomorrow and hope to get a shot with the whole outfit on Saturday at the competition. There were some troubles with the gauge on the first pair. I actually ended up cutting (!) them down to size. The seam is a little bigger than usual on the inside, but that is the only evidence. I didn't notice it when I had them on and neither did the dancer. We'll see what she says after dancing in them for a day.

Here it is on the machine:

And finished!

More highland wear

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/RhU181tuDrI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/AhTZgfOQLaM/s320/cropped_aboyne.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050001876493143730" />
Another accomplishment of Feb/March was completing a new Arisaid or Aboyne outfit for Erin. I bought a knitting machine and have been figuring out how to use it. The sole purpose for which I bought it was to make those highland dancing socks for other people and make a little money at it. These competitions can get a little expensive and it would be nice to have some cash. A friend at the dance school asked me to make some for her daughter and that was the beginning of it all. So far, I've finished a pair for my youngest daughter.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/RhU0HFtuDqI/AAAAAAAAAGI/x_nKjuoH2L4/s320/DSCN3205_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5049999853563547298" />

I showed one of these to the great folks at USA Kilts and I have a commission to make two pair for him in exchange for something (to be negotiated) at the kilt shop. Thirty at $5 a piece will bring in a little cash if they all go. They are reversible and made with real tartan that I bought from the scraps of our local kilt shop. Fun stuff and my girls love them too. I've got a couple over at Etsy which I'm selling for bit more than at the Workshop ($5 is a nice round number to collect at the table). If they go I'll be making more. It would be a nice way to pay for all the competitions we'll be going to in the coming year! I basically used this tutorial, although similar ones can be found. There were many interesting stories, testimonies of God's grace and meaningful conversations with other men. However, one particular story demanded a response, really. Our pastor provided the comic relief for the retreat and on one evening he donned a kilt and took issue with the small contingent of men from Wales. Lumping the Welsh in with the rest of Great Britain he apparently made fun of tea, the queen, kilts and sporrans. (Please understand that this was all for effect, he doesn't seriously have a beef with the UK or its culture.) The children and I had visited our local kilt shop (yes, we have one) that day to pick up some tartan scraps for making headbands to sell at a upcoming Scottish Dance event. Erin recalled to Ewan that there was a bookmark at the store that said the MacFarlane motto is "This I'll defend!"

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/Ra0zEq0YgOI/AAAAAAAAAEM/_Y4OYLmVA5k/s320/DSCN2926.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5020725314894463202" />
We talked for awhile and came up with a plan. A kilted bear, a basket of goodies from the UK including a Wallace and Gromit CD and a book by the Scottish theologian Horatius Bonar. And finally, since I had some sheep liver in my freezer, I'd make a little pot haggis (as best I could) and Ewan would challenge him to eat it!

We presented it to him after the service, where he was shocked to learn that Ewan was married in a kilt. He was such a good sport and tried the haggis - and said it wasn't bad. Yesterday we visited the alpacas of A Suri Farm. They had a bit of roving and some hand-spun yarn to sell right there alongside the animals. Since they are not far from my dad, I hope we can visit the farm when I have this all spun up. The roving I bought comes from a suri alpaca named Alice and it a very beautiful natural shade of "dark fawn". It is unbelievably soft.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:right;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/RaFeJXhsw4I/AAAAAAAAACc/OtJAbxYlFqE/s320/DSCN2879.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5017394974894637954" />
Later on in the day I stopped by Terry Kunst's stand. My Kiri shawl came from her fiber that I bought last January. This time I chose a wool/mohair blend called Sea Mist. I just love the blues that she got in this one. She had some raw fleece as well and, at only $5 per pound, I was tempted, but resisted. Three years ago that was how I got started in this whole thing. I went to her booth and bought raw wool. She told me how to wash it and a little bit of the idea of spinning. I know she exhibits at other fairs and fiber festivals. If you get a chance do try to catch her.

She's got spin!

So how a fellow knitter could come to my house for a 2 night visit and not bring her yarn and needles, I have no idea! I've since added more pictures and a bio. I've got lots of ideas of things to make, just gotta get busy. I have ideas for the kids too. Well, mainly the oldest, but my nine year old son got a whittling book for Christmas and if he practices we might have some twig roosters and hens to offer. I think Erin could come up with some creative kid kits for Valentine's Day. Fun little things to do with wee ones and all the paper already cut out for you!

All that is in the shop so far is hand-dyed roving. I love playing with color. I think I'll be working on some this week - getting some of the stash dyed so that I can purchase more wool at the PA Farm Show on Saturday! In the meantime, I expect to put some bath salts and lip butters that we made in December into the shop!

Craft House Reflections

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/RYBEzBZxsAI/AAAAAAAAAAU/bbCLDMqdDXw/s320/DSCN2693.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5008078428976558082" /> Well, the Craft House has come and gone and it went pretty smoothly. We ended up with four crafters, Trish with doggie treats and gift baskets, Laurie and her daughter with a really nice variety of things like waxed leaf firestarters, sheepy ornaments, knitted scarves, decorated frames, and beaded jewelry. My neighbor, Barb, brought a bunch of crocheted scarves at the last minute. The younger kids had the brownie jars and cocoa stuff and worry doll pins. In addition to the scrubs, salts and lip balms, I finished painting quite a few springerle ornaments, several pin cushions with shrinky dink pins and dyed bunches of roving.

About 7 or so people from town that no one knew stopped by.<img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/RYBAqRZxr_I/AAAAAAAAAAM/iTQwOJyvuss/s320/DSCN2694.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5008073880606191602" /> That was encouraging especially since we didn't do a ton of advertising. At least one expressed that they really liked the idea. A number of friends and neighbors stopped by. That was really key. Looking back the success of something like this depends on frihttp://beta.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifends both their coming and bringing some of their friends. Since I was the only one from Phoenixville, it was overwhelmingly my friends that came. A bigger group of crafters more centered in Phoenixville would have brought more people.

Still, everyone had a pleasant time. The house was filled with friends and laughter. The kids learned a lot (!) and we all managed to make a little money. I personally would really love to do it again in March with spring things and baby things. We'll see. In the meantime, we have lots of scrub and salts and lip balm and if you receive one as a Christmas gift, please don't look on them as leftovers because the intention all along was let's make these for Christmas gifts and make lots extra to try to sell.

And, this picture may make it onto Etsy.com this week as I try out that venue for selling.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_ehO4vhJlX6o/RYBFcxZxsBI/AAAAAAAAAAc/qgModdJOevk/s320/DSCN2707.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5008079146236096530" />

I'm Marcie

Saw this on another blog, can't remember which one, and thought it was fun. The wheel itself looked like it just might fall apart. The spokes were loose and the hub was coming apart as well. After admonishing my son for not keeping his hands off of it and hearing tales of other children wildly spinning the wheel unsupervised, I went to the google and found this page. My very question of how to repair the wheel spokes and hub was answered, although it took a pdf (found on the ashford site) of how to put one together in order to figure out how to take it apart.

There is a pin in the hub that must be pulled out (we used a pliers) and then you may pull out the shaft, and lift out the wheel. Upon doing this, all you need is a little wood glue and a clamp or two. Wait 30 minutes or so and reinstall. Here's a note though, make sure that the drive band is positioned correctly when you reinstall the wheel. If you don't do this, you may have to take the whole thing apart again to get the drive band on correctly. Take a wild guess as to why I know this!

We (Julius was my eager assistant the whole time - he is going to be such the engineer) then oiled it up, realigned the wheel and the bobbin drive, and tightened some screws. I think it'll be ready for a spin (yes, pun intended) tomorrow evening!

Wool for the Craft House

I've been doing some dyeing this week and last for the Craft House. There are a couple of spinners that might stop by and a number of Waldorf parents who live in the neighborhood, so I wanted to be ready. I also took some skeins of hand-spun yarn and labeled them for sale. I don't think I'll get more yarn done, but I have a few more batches of roving to dye. Dyeing is so much fun. I love playing with the colors to see how they turn out. Having a background in science I know that I should be keeping a notebook with all the concentrations of dyes and how I mixed the colors, but I'm not. That'll have to be a project when there are more than 24 hours in the day! If they don't sell at the Craft House I might just have to get one of those Etsy shops going.

Curves Crafting

Last night we delivered and set-up our craft table at our local Curves. Erin separated each of her 42 jars of pre-orders into boxes for each person with an itemized receipt. For those who ordered $40 or more she threw in a Cocoa Heaven for Two. On Saturday we (all the kids helped with this) also prepared many jars of salts and scrubs. Add to that the lip balm and our table was pretty full! On the silver tray are testers (hopefully people will limit their opening of jars to those). We put together little stand-up flyers that tell people about the products and under the table there is some extra inventory. We'll see how it goes for the rest of the week and then next week is our Craft House.

(This post is a duplicate from fieldlearning.blogspot.com)

Highland Dance Socks

I was meaning to post these at some point anyway, but here they are specifically for Karen at the dance.net forum. Erin's Highland Dance Hose. I used Jameison and Smith lace weight (2/14.5) the purple is L44 and was very hard to find the right color. It goes with her Dress Cunningham kilt. I used a one ply cobweb with the purple to make the marl and although slightly thicker than the solid color diamonds, it is really not distinguishable to someone unless they are a knitter. The stripes were duplicate stitched on top. And yes, if you look closely you can see that they aren't perfect and don't always cross exactly in the middle. All I can say is you try to knit these and see how you do!! Seriously, though, you can't tell once they are on and only a knitter would really look at that! I graphed the pattern taking reductions at the seam to get a fitted sock and figured the heel and instep from the Beehive pattern for Highland Dance Socks.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the reason they don't meet diamond tip to diamond tip at the top is that about an inch of growth is built in at the top. So, the cuff comes down over the first diamond to about the mid-point. Again, not noticeably obvious from the stage, but I won't have to be knitting new socks next year when she grows. i can rip out the toe and knit the foot longer if I have to as well. These were all tips I received from another sock knitter.

Here's a close-up to see the marl.

The Kiri Shawl

After 10 months of thinking I was going to keep a craft blog, I finally have my first real post. Well, really it is mostly pictures, but here is the Kiri Shawl with my handspun angora/merino. I love how soft it is and the little haze the angora gives it. I was pleased with the variegation as well. (Is that a word?)

And then my daughter and I tried some dyeing with plants. This yarn was spun with a merino roving treated with alum and dyed in a long goldenrod dyebath. We also did some with a short time in the bath and it is brighter. I wondering what to ply this with. A purple, a green, a blue, maybe something that keeps changing colors?

A crafty blog

Coming soon...a crafty blog.
